Bingu wa Mutharika (born Brightson Webster Ryson Thom; 24 February 1934 – 5 April 2012) was a Malawian politician and economist who was President of Malawi from May 2004 until his death in April 2012.

Was Thom supposed to be his surname or is it still part of his first name?

Considering his parents name still had Mutharika as a surname, then Thom may have been part of his middle name.

I have never heard it before. I think he changed it when he was younger.
